With locations in Kalispell and Whitefish, the Sportsman & Ski Haus is truly the number one destination retail store in Northwestern Montana. In 1968, two partners, Mel James and Don Burks, purchased a tiny surplus store in a former gas station at the intersection of highways 2 and 93 in Kalispell, Montana. Army surplus items were stacked from floor to ceiling with the remainder of the stock hanging from the ceiling. That original store, "Sportsmans Surplus", was a far cry from the big, beautifully showcased facility the Sportsman & Ski Haus has become. Along the way Mel and Don acquired another partner, Mike Gwiazdon. The original store has gone through several expansions to become a large, beautifully-appointed facility. It has grown to include a second location in the Mountain Mall in nearby Whitefish, Montana. One of the most frequent comments from out-of-town shoppers is, "I wish we had a store like this back home!".
